The 2009 Identity Theft Statewide Tour
Utah residents are getting an inside look at the fight against identity theft in Utah. Attorney General Mark Shurtleff kicked off the Utah Identity Theft Tour on September 29 at Utah State Univeristy, unveiling the latest technology to stop the devastating consequences of ID theft and providing a free document shredding service for the public.
"This tour will be an eye opener for most people," said Shurtleff. "As technology changes we need to do everything we can to educate the public about the dangers of identity theft and how they can stay ahead of the curve and protect themselves."
The statewide tour is bringing ID theft experts to offer tips and show the latest improvement to IRIS-the Identity theft Reporting Information System---a website operated by the Attorney General’s Office. IRIS has new software that speeds up the ability to file online identity theft reports and allows two-way communication between victims and law enforcement.
The award-winning website at www.idtheft.utah.govprovides online ID theft reporting, scam and data breach notifications, and allows businesses and law enforcement to validate ID theft victims. The new software and training for IRIS is now available free to every law enforcement agency in Utah. Agencies should contact Scott Morrill (801) 281-1218 or smorrill@utah.gov to set up individual meetings to install software and arrange training.
Columbus Secure Shredding, Enable Secure Shredding and Turn Community Services will provide paper shredding trucks and collection bins at each tour stop so the public can properly destroy documents that could be targeted by ID thieves (maximum: 8 legal boxes). “Shredding is a convenient and cost effective way to stop ID theft,” says Shurtleff.
Parents, teachers, students, reporters and community leaders are invited to learn how to shred their documents and learn how to keep their identities safe and secure.
