ICAC Task Force

The Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force (ICAC) is a multi-jurisdictional task force that investigates and prosecutes individuals who use the internet to exploit children.

The task force is funded by a grant from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention and administered through the Utah Attorney General’s Office.

The Utah Attorney General ICAC Task Force was created in 2000 and is one of 61 ICAC task forces in the country. Because so many internet crimes against children cross state lines, the state affiliates work closely together (very unique compared to regular police task forces). Utah’s ICAC has 37 (affiliates) local, state and federal police agencies involved in the task force and over 100 ICAC Task Force police officers throughout the state.

In addition to investigators and prosecutors, the Utah AG office employs a full time Education Specialist and sponsors the Digital Respons-Ability program to educate children, parents and community on Internet Safety presentations.

Crimes We Investigate

  • Sexual Exploitation of a Minor (possessing, distributing and manufacturing child pornography)
  • Enticing a Minor over the Internet (with the intent of committing sexual acts to the child)
  • Dealing in Material Harmful to a Minor (sending pornography to a minor and/or sexting)

What parents can do to keep their children safe

  • Making sure your child is mature enough to access the internet (includes smartphones, Xboxes, tablets, readers, etc)
  • Parents being educated on electronic devices & social sites “settings”
  • Getting software on computers, mobile devices to monitor children’s internet activity (most kids will have 2 facebooks, 2 kik accounts, etc…one for parents to monitor and one for them to use with their friends)
  • Educating children that anything that they send through the Internet/phone can never be retrieved and will always be on the Internet
  • Limit their children Internet use
  • Educating children about personal info they put on the internet about themselves (parents need to do that to)
  • Educating children to never give out passwords to friends regardless
  • Teaching kids to never take nude selfies or forward someone else nude selfie
